It’s that time of the year again!

Halloween has officially crept upon us, and there’s so much to look forward to. From brainstorming our costumes to carving pumpkins and, of course eating lots of treats. But what do you do when you are a scuba diver? Well, we have a few tips for you!

Why not try something different than every previous year?
Carving pumpkins on land were fun when you were a youngster, but it’s time to take things up a notch with underwater pumpkin carving! We have found the best event for you!

PADI Pumpkin Carving Specialty Diver

Every year we celebrate Halloween underwater! You can bring your spookiest outfit and join our Pumpkin Carving Dive. Be ready get your PADI Underwater Pumpkin Carving Specialty. During this event, we will explain all in the ins and outs about carving a pumpkin underwater.

Where it all begun

Pumpkins are popular decorations during Halloween. A carved pumpkin illuminated by candles is known as a ‘jack-o-lantern’. The tradition is believed to have come from Ireland, where they used to carve faces into turnips, beet and other root vegetables as part of the Gaelic festival of Samhain. In the 1800’s a couple of waves of Irish immigrants came to America. The Irish immigrants quickly discovered that Pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve out. So they used pumpkins for Jack O’Lanterns.

Let’s go underwater!

This tradition no longer has to be on land, we continue this tradition underwater. But before we can light up the pumpkins underwater, we have to carve some beautiful creations!

This is what you will learn during your Pumpkin Carving Specialty

 How you prepare your pumpkin on land
We want the ocean a cleaner place, so we obviously clean the pumpkin on land for this reason. Besides cleaning your pumpkin, we talk about your well-thought-out design for the pumpkin and how to prepare that before doing the dive.

 How to plan a pumpkin carving dive
Like the rule of thumbs: Plan your dive and dive your plan. The same goes for a pumpkin carving dive. You agree upon a depth, an area and the time you spend underwater, but also account for all the extra equipment you need. How can we have fun and not disturb our surroundings underwater

 How to take a buoyant pumpkin with you underwater
So we would like to remind you what buoyancy is. Buoyancy is the upward force exerted on an object placed in a liquid. Whether or not an object has buoyancy depends mostly on two factors: the amount of water an object displaces and the density of an object. Like for an example, a pumpkin is not very dense and displaces more water, therefore it floats. How to take it down safely is important! We even discuss what to do with a runaway pumpkin.
 Best body position underwater for carving
Is it a one-man job, two-man job? Do we hover? Fin pivot? Or do we carve upside down? How to stabilize yourself and your pumpkin? How to keep a steady hand to use the knife for carving? A question we will explain. We will not be losing fingers, even though it is Halloween.

After the day dive, the pumpkin will be judged by a secretly selected jury. You have the chance to win beautiful prizes! For some inspiration look at the picture below. Don’t mind the people, for sure that they are scary. But look at the pumpkins, see one you like?!
